Ecological flooding is essential for the restoration of floodplain-like habitats in retention areas.
Ecological flooding is carried out depending on the water level of the river Rhine, and corresponds – as far as possible – with natural flooding of the floodplain. This enables the natural environment to adapt to these conditions, so that it can remain almost entirely intact following the more rarely occurring flooding events.
To improve understanding, mach:idee developed an exhibition concept with information boards and animations. These can be seen in the permanent exhibition of the Naturschutzzentrum Karlsruhe (Nature Conservation Centre in Karlsruhe, Germany) since 2010.
