Client: Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau), 2018 – 2020

A wide range of 3D models were modelled according to plan specifications for the visual system of the ship handling simulator of the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute.

Important landmarks, hydraulic structures such as locks and harbours, assets and small components such as dolphins and bollards were created, as well as ship models, which were prepared in further preprocessing for interactive control in the ship handling simulator.

In most cases, original building plans and photographs served as the basis for the data.

The same requirements with respect to real-time modelling as those that apply to common game applications such as Unreal(1), Godot(2) and Unity(3) were to be met. This means the lowest possible polygon count and textures optimised for DirextX applications. The textures created in the DDS(*) format thus always correspond to square powers of two with MipMaps. Examples of texture dimensions 2 exp8 = 512 x 512, 2exp12 = 4096 x 4096 pixels, etc.

The models are used in the ship handling simulator of the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute.
